With the technological advancement, now we are available with four modified formats of MBOX file format which are explained below in brief:

  1. MBOXO file format: This file format is supported by Eudora. In it, the messages are not kept intact as attachments of the messages are separated and are kept as individual files in a separate folder. Here in place of senders email address, a constant string “???@???” is used.
  2. MBOXRD file format: Qmail, Thunderbird, Netscape are some of the email clients which support MBOXRD file format which indicates the beginning of message with ‘From’ string either in the header or the body of the message.
  3. MBOXCL file format: In this file format content-length: header is used to locate the starting of message instead of ‘From’ line. It is being done so as email message is transformed before appending and Content-length denotes the length of the message that is in octets.
  4. MBOXCL2 file format: It is the same file format as that of MBOXCL as it also uses content-length to indicate the start of the message with only difference that it does not transform the email message before storing.

Both MBOXCL and MBOXCL2 file format are used by UNIX ‘System V’ mailboxes.

With the availability of various email clients, migration from one email client to another is quite obvious.
